The mums at the Manly Beach Running Club (aka The Superstars!) have started a morning running session specifically for mums in Manly and the surrounding area. They have clubbed together to share the cost of a personal trainer that specializes in weight loss and toning. This gives them the benefit of having an experienced coach on hand to ask questions and advice without paying for the cost of a PT session individually. They meet every week day Monday to Friday at Manly Surf Club at 5.30am. Training starts with a warm up run along the coast past the beautiful Cabbage Tree Bay to Shelly Beach, followed by a run back past Manly Surf Club and onto the sand up to Queenscliff beach. As the sun pops up over the ocean they begin a short session of core and strength training which incorporates several exercises designed to target legs, bums and tums. At around 6.15am they jog back to the Surf Club, finishing the session at 6.30am, just in time for a quick coffee before heading home for breakfast. The Manly Beach Running Club is a fun and friendly environment. Mums help to keep each other motivated which means that they stay consistent and push each other to reach their fitness and weight loss goals. Fitness levels in the group range from beginners to intermediate with a couple of Superstars even training for a marathon in 2013! We also have a group starting at 9:30 on Wednesdays for those who like a later start! Contact Joe at Manly Beach Running Club for more info or join our Facebook Group.

I began running with Joe at the beginning of the year. Four months later I was fit enough to complete the ultra marathon in Canberra, and continuing to train towards the next goal. The running group caters to all fitness levels and goals and Joe is a true leader supporting you at the pace and stage you are at. Since January we have seen people run their first 10km, 21.2km and in September a group of us will complete the Sydney Marathon. It’s a true privilege to be able to share in everyone’s achievements. Joe you have created an environment where everyone feels welcome and supported. Thank you.

The Manly Beach Running club is just what I need. The coaching is extremely accommodating to all levels, but what I love is that Joe is passionate about the fitness development of every member of the club. Off the top off his head Joe can rattle off my pace, goal times and personal bests. That kind of commitment in a coach should speak for itself.

I love running with Jo, he sets a great relaxed pace and is a mind of information on fitness. I can highly recommend his running group and my fitness has improved immensely.

I’ve been going to these sessions for about 2 months now and love it. We are running a half marathon on the weekend but that is by no means the standard. Many people turn up only during the week to do a nice gentle 6km (about 7km per minute or so) including some sand running and a bit of core work. If you want to feel really happy and positive about being alive then this club could work for you. Drop a few kilos, have a chat but most importantly be happy and motivated. Joe has taken on quite a few nice runs, around North Head, to the Quarantine station and Collins Flat, through St Pats, coastal runs down to Dee Why and Long Reef and the Manly to Spit run. We are planning a run around Manly Dam and a Blue Mountains jaunt at some stage. It is a great way to get out in the local area and appreciate the beauty we have around us. Group running keeps me motivated, makes me feel part of a community and gives me that little extra push that I sometimes need. Manly Beach Running Club has the best coach and the nicest members ever! :-)

If you have reservations about the early start, do not despair, you will soon be jumping out of bed before 5am in anticipation! Joe is an experienced ultra marathon runner, but there is no ego – he bursts with positive energy and if motivation is what you need, he has a way of encouraging and gently coaxing out the runner inside you (yes, the one you did not know you had).
I have seen fellow runners (mostly Northern beaches mums) who joined the group go from 0 to 6-10kms in a space of a few weeks with ease; some continue to build up the distance to a half/full marathon. (hello Superstar Anita : ) – please see review above).
Joe has provided valuable tips on nutrition, stretching and running technique, all of which made running an enjoyable and pain free activity. I love the social aspect of the group too and meeting some amazing individuals – we may sometimes be short of breath, but never of conversation. Thanks a million Joey!

Having two kids and working full-time in the City, I had no time for exercise until I decided to join Joe’s running classes 3 months ago for the sessions earlier in the mornings (5:30am).

Joe was patient and supportive when my level of fitness was low. He was always positive and happy and I was having fun, enjoying the nice views of the beach and feeling proud of myself after each session.

Manly Beach Running Club became part of my routine. I have 3 to 4 sessions/ week (6 to 7 kms each) and I also join the group for weekend runs as I am training for a half Marathon. We had a beautiful 16 kms run last weekend, Joe and the more experienced runners really encourage us and I can only say THANK YOU Manly Beach Running Club, I really feel like a Superstar!!
