Tips for children’s birthday parties

by Dalia Kassis, director, Tiny Tots Toy Hire

Choosing a venue:

Nothing beats Home Sweet Home when throwing a party for the littlies! That is the place where they are most comfortable and secure, which is very important for them to enjoy the day. Not to mention, their bed is close by in case they need to nap immediately before or after the party. Backyard parties are the most memorable and personal for the under 5’s and can be themed just as beautifully as any venue. If having the party at your home is not an option (due to size etc) then the local park is also a great alternative (on a sunny day!)

Lolly buffets are the IN THING at the moment – so why not join in the hype? They can be visually stunning and impress both kids and adults…not mention extremely yummy! You can DIY by hiring props from places like Tiny Tots Toy Hire who specialise in props for kids parties or if you have the budget, you can hire a professional such as Sophisticated Yumbased in Sydney. Seeing that there will be plenty of lollies and desserts (think colour coordinated lollies, cake pops, push pops, macarons, themed cookies) to eat at the end of the party and take home, it’s best to keep lunch/afternoon tea on the healthy side. Individual lunch boxes are a great idea, and can include things like sushi, sandwiches, cheese sticks, fruit skewer/containers etc. Lastly, hire some kids’ tables and chairs that not only look super sweet in the photos but kids love having their own special table to sit at with their friends.

Little ones under 3 don’t have the attention span to enjoy overly long or complicated party games. A lot of them are also scared of party entertainers such as clowns, characters etc. There’s nothing worse than the boy or birthday girl having a melt down at their own party! So you’re better off providing them with a little play area where they can do their thing with their little buddies without pressure or strange faces. You can’t go wrong with hiring some large outdoor toys for the weekend. Things like ball pits for the under 3’s are extremely popular, along with slides, ride-on cars and seesaws. You will be surprised how it will keep them entertained for hours, so the parents can actually enjoy themselves too!

Sticking to a budget:

With so much available to us these days and so many tempting hard to resist choices, sticking to a budget is harder than ever! Here are some tips:

1. Make sure you have the RSVP’s at least one week before the party to minimise wastage in terms of food, party bags etc.

2. Write down exactly what food you will serve and the quantity needed.

3. If you are a keen baker (and you don’t have to be very good as it’s made with love!) bake the birthday cake yourself or cheat by buying the cake and decorating it yourself – shhh no one needs to know!

4. Don’t go overboard with expensive jumping castles, professional entertainment and complex party games for the under 2’s as they can get overwhelmed and not enjoy it. Hiring a few toys to place in your home or a local party, is more than enough to keep them and their little buddies entertained for hours!
